Indian Rummy is a game of skill. It’s a simple skill that can be easily acquired with practice…and it’s a lot of fun too! But before you start playing this exciting card game, it will be helpful to know these 4 essential Rummy Rules that will take you from being a novice to a champion.

#1. Know when to go for the ‘Drop’

The first Rummy rule is to know that it is NOT mandatory to play all hands that are dealt. The real skill lies in choosing which hand to play and which to fold/drop. It may be tempting to play each hand that you are dealt in the hope of getting connecting cards, but resisting that temptation is what will benefit you in the long run.

#2. Pure Sequence is your ticket to winning

In card game Rummy, the objective is to arrange all cards in sequences and sets. The first step is to get your pure sequence in place. A pure sequence is a meld of 3 or more cards of the same suit. For example 3, 4, 5 of diamonds or 9, 10, J, Q of spades. Once that is out of the way, you need a second sequence, which may or may not be pure.
An impure sequence is the one that is made using a Joker or wild card. The remaining cards can be arranged in sequences or sets depending on the cards in hand. A set is cards of same face value but different suits. For example 4 of hearts, 4 of clubs and 4 of diamonds is a valid set but 4 of hearts, 4 of clubs, 4 of hearts is an invalid set.

#3. ‘Joker’ can be the game changer

Don’t underestimate the value of a Joker, says RummyCircle. A joker is a card selected randomly at the beginning of each game and can be used as a substitute to any card in the deck. So if you have a 3 and 5 of diamonds and the selected Joker is K of hearts, then viola, you have your impure sequence with the Joker doubling up as the 4 of diamonds.

#4.  It’s not only about winning but also minimizing your losses

Numbered cards are worth their face-value, so a 6 of any suit is worth six points. Royal cards, i.e. J, Q, K and Ace, are worth ten points. If someone else declares the game, then Points of cards in your hand that are not melded in sequences or sets, are added as your loss points. So while you are waiting for the right cards to declare your game, try to reduce the points in your hand. This way, even if the opponent declares the game before you, you can easily cut your losses.

Now that you know the basics of this thrilling card game, it’s time to start playing. Play a Rummy game on rummycircle.com today and bid goodbye to boredom.
